<p>Vorher waren die Goldmünzen zu 10 und 20 Mark die wichtigsten Zahlungsmittel. Die Goldwährung sorgte seit den 1870er Jahren für Stabilität. Sie fiel auch zusammen mit steigendem Wohlstand (auf niedrigem Niveau) und beachtlichem Wirtschaftswachstum. Obwohl es Phasen steigender, wie auch fallender Preise gab stieg das Sozialprodukt pro Kopf stetig an. Insgesamt sorgte die Goldwähung auch für Preisstabilität. Die Verbraucherpreise lagen 1877 auf dem gleichen Level wie 1900. Danacht stiegen sie allerdings um 30% an bis 2013.</p>
<p><span id="more-19"></span>Vom 20 Markstück waren 220 Millionen Stück im Wert von 4,5 Milliarden Mark in Umlauf. Das waren über 1500 Tonnen Gold. Ein 20 Markstück wog 7,168 Gramm. Banknoten galten nicht als Bargeld.</p>
